About this index
Who we are, how we source data, and why this site exists.
What is the European BESS Index?
The European BESS Index is a free, open-access reference site for battery energy storage markets in Europe. We track installed capacity, revenue benchmarks, optimization platforms, and market structure across 15+ European countries.
We built this because we couldn't find what we needed. When we started working in Nordic BESS optimization, there was no single resource that pulled together pan-European capacity data, revenue benchmarks by bidding zone, and an honest comparison of who does what in this market. Pexapark has toll benchmarks (gated). Modo covers the UK deeply. Aurora publishes excellent research behind a paywall. But nobody offered a free, open overview of the full European BESS landscape — the kind of thing you'd want when sizing a new market or evaluating optimization partners.
So we made one.
Editorial disclosure
This site is published and maintained by Qurrent AB, a BESS optimization company based in Stockholm, Sweden. Qurrent operates in Nordic electricity markets (SE, FI, DK, NO) and is listed in our company directory alongside competitors.
We have an obvious interest in this market. We've tried to handle that honestly: Qurrent appears as one entry among 15+ companies, with the same data fields and the same level of scrutiny as everyone else. The comparison pages present factual differences — markets served, capabilities, capacity — rather than subjective rankings. Company profiles are based on publicly available information and are editable via the submission form.
If you think we've gotten something wrong about any company (including ours), let us know.
Data sources and methodology
Capacity data
Installed capacity figures are compiled from national TSO publications, SolarPower Europe's annual Battery Storage Outlook, and Wood Mackenzie's European Energy Storage Monitor. Where official data conflicts between sources, we present ranges or note the discrepancy. Pipeline figures include only projects with confirmed grid connection agreements or approved planning permissions.
Revenue benchmarks
Revenue estimates are constructed by modeling a theoretical 1 MW / 1 MWh BESS system in each market under three scenarios:
Low: Day-ahead arbitrage only, heuristic bidding. Mid: Multi-market optimization across DA, ID, and 1–2 ancillary products. High: Full revenue stacking with premium products, optimal market switching, and capacity/system service revenues where available.
Day-ahead price data is sourced from the ENTSO-E Transparency Platform via their public API. Ancillary service prices come from individual TSO procurement platforms (e.g., regelleistung.net for Germany, NGESO for UK, Svenska kraftnät and Fingrid for Nordics). Where available, we use marginal clearing prices rather than pay-as-bid averages.
Estimates are cross-checked against published benchmarks from Modo Energy (UK) and disclosed figures from market participants at industry conferences. We don't claim these are forecasts — they're indicative benchmarks based on trailing 12-month data.
Company profiles
Company data is sourced from corporate websites, press releases, conference presentations, regulatory filings, and direct submissions. Capacity-under-management figures are approximate and based on public disclosures; many companies don't publish exact numbers. The capability matrix (AI/ML, multi-market, BRP, BSP, etc.) reflects publicly verifiable features. We update profiles when companies submit corrections or when we identify new public information.
What "~" means
The tilde (~) prefix indicates estimated or rounded values. We use it when the underlying data is itself an estimate, when we're rounding for readability, or when sources disagree and we're presenting a mid-point. Precise figures are shown without the tilde where available from primary TSO sources.
Update cadence
Revenue data: Monthly refresh based on trailing ENTSO-E data. Capacity data: Quarterly, following SolarPower Europe and WoodMac publication cycles. Company profiles: Ongoing, as corrections and submissions are received. Market outlook: Quarterly or when significant market developments occur.
Changelog
March 2026: Site launched. Initial data covering 15 European markets, 15+ company profiles, 6 head-to-head comparisons, interactive capacity/revenue map, full market outlook.
Upcoming: Q2 2026 revenue data refresh, additional company profiles pending submission review, expanded Nordic market deep-dive.
